Caraúbas is in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, in Brazil's semi-arid Northeast. The town takes its name from the caraúba, a tree native to the region. On a map, the centre is a compact, fairly regular grid of streets around a main church square, surrounded by dry scrubland known as caatinga.
Water shapes life in this part of Brazil. Streams run only in the rainy season, and small reservoirs, called açudes, store what they can. They appear on the map as irregular shapes outside town, connected by dirt roads and seasonal watercourses.
