Cartagena sits on Spain's southeastern coast in the Region of Murcia, around one of the finest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. The map shows why it has been a strategic port for more than two thousand years: a deep bay opens to the sea through a narrow mouth, flanked by steep headlands that once carried forts and coastal batteries.
The city was founded around 227 BC by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal as Qart Hadasht, later becoming the Roman Carthago Nova. Its compact old town lies between several small hills, and excavations there uncovered a large Roman theatre, now restored and linked to a museum. Nearby, the naval arsenal fills the western waterfront with docks and long rectangular basins.
Beyond the historic core, the city spreads north across flatter ground in more regular blocks, with ring roads curving around its edges, and its municipal territory reaches the shore of the Mar Menor lagoon to the east.
