Castelfranco Veneto grew around a square fortress founded by Treviso at the end of the twelfth century to guard its western frontier. From above, that origin is still unmistakable. The historic centre is a nearly perfect square enclosed by brick walls and towers and surrounded by a moat. Inside, a small grid of streets fills the space, and the town spreads outward around it on every side.
The castle town is best known as the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Giorgione. His altarpiece, the Castelfranco Madonna, is in the cathedral inside the walls. Outside, the newer town follows roads radiating toward Treviso, Padua and Vicenza, with the flat, cultivated Venetian plain beyond.
