Cerveteri stands on a tuff ridge in northern Lazio, a short distance inland from the Tyrrhenian coast and north-west of Rome. It occupies the site of Caere, one of the most important Etruscan cities. On the map, the medieval centre sits on a compact spur of high ground, and newer neighbourhoods spread down the slopes and along the roads towards the sea.
Just outside the town lies the Banditaccia necropolis, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Tarquinia. Here the Etruscans laid out their tombs along streets like a city of the dead. The great round tumuli are among the most recognisable shapes of any archaeological site in Italy. Around them, fields and ravines cut into the soft volcanic rock.
