Chanderi lies in the Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh, in hilly country near the Betwa River. The town sits below a hilltop fort, and on a map the old streets gather at the foot of the slopes, winding between reservoirs, step-wells and the remains of old gateways. The terrain gives the town an irregular, organic shape.
Chanderi is known across India for its handwoven Chanderi sarees, light fabrics made from silk and cotton with fine borders. Weaving still takes place in homes throughout the town.
