Changping covers the northern edge of the Beijing plain, where the city's grid of expressways and new residential blocks runs into the first ridges of the Yanshan range. From above, the contrast is sharp. The south is dense and built up, while the north and west turn into folded hills, valleys and reservoirs, with roads winding through them instead of running straight.
The district's best-known feature lies in one of those valleys. The Ming Tombs, burial ground of thirteen Ming emperors, sit in a basin chosen for its feng shui, and the long spirit way leading to them still shows as a straight line through the landscape. Further northwest, the Juyongguan pass carries a section of the Great Wall across the mountains toward the plain.
