Charata stands on the flat lands of Argentina's Chaco province, far from the hills and the coast. The town was laid out in the planned way common across the Argentine interior. From above you see a regular grid of square blocks, with a central plaza and avenues running out to the edges of town.
Around the town the grid carries on at a much larger scale. Straight rural roads divide the plain into broad agricultural plots, part of the farming economy that has long supported the region. The contrast between the fine urban grid and the coarse field grid is the most striking thing about Charata on a map.
