Charleston is the seat of Coles County in east-central Illinois, and its street pattern follows the classic Midwestern model. At the centre is a courthouse square, and from it the grid runs out in every direction across level prairie farmland. Streets meet at right angles, blocks are regular, and the town's edges fade into long, straight section-line roads.
The south side of town is shaped by Eastern Illinois University, whose campus shows up as a looser arrangement of buildings, lawns and paths set inside the grid. In 1858 Charleston hosted the fourth of the Lincoln–Douglas debates, which gives the town a place in national history. Lake Charleston and the Embarras River lie to the south-east, adding the only curved lines on the map.
