The Thillai Nataraja Temple occupies a large rectangular enclosure, and the main streets run parallel to its walls in nested squares, the way many old Tamil temple towns were laid out. The town sits on the low coastal plain of Tamil Nadu, a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal, with the Kollidam and Vellar rivers reaching the sea to the north and south.
