Chikuma Map Poster
Chikuma lies in northern Nagano Prefecture, in the valley south of Nagano city. The city takes its name from the Chikuma River, which runs through it on its way to becoming the Shinano, Japan's longest river. On a map the river is the clear centre, with the built-up area following both banks and mountains closing in on either side.
The present city was formed in 2003 by merging several towns, and the map shows it: separate clusters linked by rail and road along the valley floor. On one bank is the Togura-Kamiyamada hot-spring area. Orchards and farmland climb the lower slopes, and forested ridges rise above them.
Chikuma is known for the Obasute terraced rice fields, where the moon's reflection in the flooded paddies has been celebrated in Japanese poetry for centuries. A Chikuma map poster shows the valley plainly: river, rail line, small town centres and the steep hillsides that frame them.
