Chikushino-shi lies southeast of Fukuoka city, in the corridor between the Fukuoka plain and the Chikushi plain. From above, the built area stretches through a valley, with wooded hills rising on the east and west. Two parallel railway lines, the JR Kagoshima line and the Nishitetsu line, run through it, along with the Kyushu Expressway.
The city is home to Futsukaichi Onsen, one of the oldest hot spring areas in Kyushu, mentioned in early literary records. It borders Dazaifu, the historic seat of government in ancient Kyushu, and shares its hills and valley with that city.
