Ciudad Sandino sits just west of Managua, and from above it looks very different from the older capital beside it. The streets form a steady, repetitive grid of narrow blocks, most of them lined with single-storey houses, and the pattern continues for a long way before it breaks up into fields and scattered plots at the edge of town.
The town grew as a resettlement area in the 1970s, when families displaced from low-lying and damaged parts of Managua were moved here, and it was later renamed after Augusto César Sandino.
