Ciutadella de Menorca sits at the western end of the island and was its capital until the eighteenth century. Its most distinctive feature from above is the harbour: a long, narrow natural inlet that cuts deep into the rocky coast, lined with quays and overlooked by the old town on its southern side.
The historic centre is a tight web of streets, squares and arcades, including the arched walkway of Ses Voltes, with the cathedral at its heart. The line of the old city walls survives in the ring of wide avenues that encircle the centre. Beyond them, a more regular grid of newer districts spreads out towards the coast.
A Ciutadella map poster shows the fine grain of the old town, the clean ring of the boulevards and the sharp cut of the harbour. The town is also known for its midsummer Sant Joan festival, famous for its horses, which fills these streets every June.
