Clydesdale lies in the hilly interior of the Eastern Cape, close to the KwaZulu-Natal border in the Umzimkhulu area. It is not a gridded town. From above the settlement is a loose scatter of homesteads across rolling ground, joined by gravel roads and footpaths that bend around slopes and stream valleys.
The land itself sets the pattern. Hillsides, grassland and small watercourses decide where roads can go, so the network curves and branches instead of running straight. Clusters of buildings appear on gentler ground, with open space between them. It is a pattern shared by much of the rural Eastern Cape, and it looks quite unlike an urban map.
