Contla, officially Contla de Juan Cuamatzi, lies in the state of Tlaxcala on the lower flanks of La Malinche, the large volcano that dominates the region. The town's streets form a fairly regular grid in the centre, but the land rises steadily to the east, and the map shows fields and roads stretching up toward the mountain.
