Cradock lies in the Eastern Cape on the banks of the Great Fish River, in the semi-arid country of the Karoo. The town grew on a regular grid of streets laid out beside the river, with flat-topped hills rising around it. From above, the green line of the river valley and irrigated land contrasts with the dry, open veld beyond.
The writer Olive Schreiner lived in the area and is buried on a hilltop nearby, and the town is also remembered for the Cradock Four, anti-apartheid activists killed in 1985. The Mountain Zebra National Park lies a short distance to the west, protecting the rugged terrain that frames the town.
