Crowthorne is a large village in Berkshire, in the heathland and pine forest country south-east of Reading. It grew in the nineteenth century around Wellington College, the public school founded in memory of the Duke of Wellington, and Broadmoor, the high-security psychiatric hospital on the hill to the east.
On the map, these institutions occupy large, clearly bounded estates, and the village sits between them. Residential roads spread out along the main street, with cul-de-sacs and closes filling the gaps left by the woodland.
