Cueto lies in Holguín Province in eastern Cuba, inland from the northern coast and not far from the town of Mayarí. From above, it shows the compact grid typical of Cuban towns, with a central square and straight blocks. A railway line passes through it, a reminder of the sugar industry that shaped much of this part of the island.
Cueto is widely known through music. The town is named in Chan Chan, the son by Compay Segundo made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, which traces a journey from Alto Cedro to Marcané, on to Cueto and then Mayarí. Those place names map a real route through the countryside of Holguín.
