Cullinan lies east of Pretoria in Gauteng, South Africa, and it grew up around the Premier diamond mine. The town's layout is shaped by the mine itself: a small grid of streets on one side, and on the other the huge excavation known as the Big Hole, with mine works and dumps around it.
In 1905 the Cullinan Diamond was found here. At about 3,106 carats in its rough form, it remains the largest gem-quality diamond ever found. Stones cut from it are part of the British Crown Jewels. Mining has continued at Cullinan ever since.
