Dalian occupies the southern end of the Liaodong Peninsula, with water on almost every side: the Yellow Sea to the east and south, the Bohai Sea to the west. The coastline is heavily indented, and the city's districts spread across headlands, bays and hills. From above, the sea shapes nearly every edge, and the port faces the bay on the northeastern shore.
The central street pattern was laid out around the start of the twentieth century under Russian and then Japanese control, and it is unusual for a Chinese city. Roads radiate from circular plazas, most notably Zhongshan Square, where banks and public buildings form a ring. The result is a network of diagonals and roundabouts that reads almost like a European plan.
Along the southern coast, a scenic road follows the cliffs past beaches and parks, and Xinghai Square, among the largest city squares in Asia, opens onto the sea.
