Date lies in the northern part of the Fukushima basin, north of Fukushima city, with the Abukuma River running through it. On the map, it is a patchwork of town centres, villages and farmland rather than a single dense core, formed by the merger of several municipalities in 2006. Mountains rise on the edges of the basin.
The area is known for its fruit, especially peaches, and for anpo-gaki, a soft dried persimmon made in the region for generations. The city's name recalls the Date clan, the warrior family whose origins lie in this area before it rose to power in Sendai.
