Devizes is a market town in Wiltshire, on high ground at the edge of the Vale of Pewsey. Its centre is organised around a large market place, one of the broadest in the south of England, and the streets around it follow an unusual curved pattern shaped by the outer defences of the medieval castle. From above, these arcs are easy to pick out.
The Kennet and Avon Canal passes along the northern side of town, and to the west it descends the Caen Hill Locks, a flight of twenty-nine locks, sixteen of them in a straight line up the hillside. On a Devizes map poster this staircase reads as a sequence of short, evenly spaced segments, one of the most distinctive details anywhere on the canal network.
The town is also home to the Wadworth brewery, and it marks the start of the Devizes to Westminster canoe race, held each Easter along the canal and the Thames. Georgian fronts line the market place, and the old castle site sits at the southwest of the centre. It is a compact, walkable town with a strong sense of its own shape.
