Dunhao lies in the hill country of northeastern Chongqing, where towns rarely get to spread out. From above, the built-up area follows the flat ground along valleys and watercourses. Contour-hugging roads link it to the villages around it. The street pattern is compact and practical, shaped more by the slopes around it than by any master plan.
