Egham is in Surrey, on the south bank of the Thames, just upstream from Staines. From above, the town is bordered by the river, the flat water meadows of Runnymede and the motorway ring of the M25. The high street runs through the middle, and residential streets rise toward Englefield Green and the higher ground to the west.
Runnymede is where King John sealed Magna Carta in 1215, and the meadows are now preserved as open land with several memorials. On Cooper's Hill above them stands the Air Forces Memorial. Royal Holloway, University of London, has its campus on the hill, and its Victorian Founder's Building is one of the most striking buildings in the area.
