Entroncamento is in the Santarém district of central Portugal. Its name means junction, and the town grew up at the point where the Northern line meets the Eastern line of the Portuguese railway network. On a map, the railway yards and tracks dominate the centre, and the streets are laid out around them.
The town is home to the National Railway Museum, housed in the old railway complex, and generations of railway workers have shaped its identity. The residential streets form a fairly regular pattern on flat ground, and farmland and the Tagus valley lie nearby.
