Ermelo stands on the high, rolling grasslands of Mpumalanga, at around 1,700 metres. The town centre follows a wide, regular grid of long blocks typical of nineteenth-century settlements in the interior. Beyond it, newer townships and suburbs spread outward, each with its own street pattern.
It was founded in the 1880s and named after the town of Ermelo in the Netherlands. Several important national roads meet here, and it serves as a service centre for the coal mining and farming district around it. Railway lines also pass through, adding long straight lines to the map.
