Eshowe stands on high ground in KwaZulu-Natal, inland from the coast, in the historic heart of Zululand. From above, the town wraps around the Dlinza Forest, a patch of indigenous forest that sits within the town itself, so its streets curve around a large green space rather than running through it.
The Dlinza Forest is known for its aerial boardwalk, which carries visitors through the canopy, and for its birdlife. Nearby Fort Nongqayi, a late nineteenth-century fort, houses a museum complex. Beyond town, roads wind down through rolling hills, sugar cane fields and rural homesteads.
