Fengrun is a district of Tangshan in eastern Hebei, north of the city's main urban area. It sits where the North China Plain begins to give way to the foothills of the Yan Mountains, which rise further north. On a map, the district centre is a compact block of wide, straight streets set among farmland, villages and industrial sites.
Much of the Tangshan area was rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake, one of the deadliest of the twentieth century, and wide, planned streets are typical of the region today. In Fengrun, broad avenues form a regular grid. Rivers and channels cross the surrounding land at gentler angles, adding a second, softer layer to the drawing.
