Ficksburg is a Free State town on the western bank of the Caledon River, which marks the border with Lesotho. The map shows an ordered grid of streets typical of South African country towns. There are broad blocks and straight roads, and the town is set in open farmland with the river curving along its eastern side.
The town is known for its cherry orchards and the annual Cherry Festival, often described as the oldest crop festival in South Africa. Many of its older buildings are built from local golden sandstone. A border crossing nearby links Ficksburg with Maputsoe on the Lesotho side, so the town is also a gateway between the two countries.
