Ga-Rankuwa lies northwest of Pretoria and is now part of the City of Tshwane. On a map it reads as a planned settlement. Residential areas are laid out as distinct zones, each with its own internal pattern of small blocks, and they are linked by wider roads that run through open ground. The overall shape is spread out rather than centred on a single core.
The township was developed in the 1960s under apartheid-era planning and later lay within the Bophuthatswana homeland. That history is visible in the layout: separate districts, set apart from the city centre and connected to it by long transport routes. Today it is home to a large community and to a major academic hospital.
