Gantang is a town in the south-west of Hunan province, China, in a landscape of low mountains, forested ridges and narrow valleys. Flat land is scarce here, so settlements tend to follow river valleys, where roads, fields and houses share the level ground. On a map the town takes the shape of the land around it.
The street pattern is compact, with roads running through the built-up area and smaller lanes branching toward the slopes. Around it the map opens into small fields on the valley floor. The hills around the town carry only a few winding roads and paths, which climb toward scattered villages.
