Gaolou lies in the southeastern part of Gansu province, in the loess highlands of western China. This is a landscape of deeply eroded hills, terraced slopes and narrow valleys, where settlements naturally gather on the flatter ground along streams. On the map, that shapes everything: streets follow the valley floor rather than a planned grid.
Roads trace the valleys and switch back up the slopes, connecting the town to neighbouring villages and county centres.
