Gar County lies in Ngari Prefecture in the far west of the Tibet Autonomous Region, and its seat, the town of Shiquanhe, serves as the administrative centre of the prefecture. It stands at more than 4,000 metres above sea level on the Sênggê Zangbo, the name used locally for the upper course of the Indus River.
From above, the town appears as a compact, fairly regular arrangement of streets and blocks on flat ground beside the river, with braided channels and bare plains spreading out around it. Beyond that lies an enormous open landscape of high desert and mountains, crossed by only a few roads. Few maps show such a clear contrast between settlement and surrounding space.
