Gbadolite lies in the far north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the capital of Nord-Ubangi province, a short distance south of the Ubangi River and the border with the Central African Republic. From above, the town is a loose arrangement of streets set within green, forested land.
Parts of the town were laid out with wide avenues and large plots, in contrast to the smaller, more irregular neighbourhoods around them. A Gbadolite map poster shows both patterns, along with the long airport runway that stands out as one of the strongest lines on the map.
Gbadolite was the home town of Mobutu Sese Seko, who built palaces and infrastructure there during his rule. The airport was built with a runway long enough for large jets, and the ruins of his palace complex remain nearby.
