Glendale fills a basin between the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains. From above, the flat southern half is a regular street grid, and it breaks up into winding, dead-end roads as soon as the land starts to climb. The Los Angeles River and the freeway interchange near Griffith Park mark the southwest corner.
Brand Boulevard runs north to south through the commercial centre, past the Glendale Galleria and the Americana at Brand, and it gives the grid a clear spine. The Ventura Freeway runs east to west across the south of the city, and the Glendale Freeway cuts diagonally up toward the foothills.
Forest Lawn Memorial Park covers a large area of landscaped hillside at the southern edge. Glendale is also home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the United States.
