Gryazovets is a town in Vologda Oblast, in the forested north of European Russia, roughly an hour's drive south of Vologda. It stands on the Rzhavka, a small river, and developed around a station on the railway running north from Yaroslavl. On the map, the railway line and the town's main streets form its basic frame.
The centre is arranged in a simple, regular pattern of blocks, with low-rise houses and gardens extending outward to the edges. Beyond them, the map breaks into fields, woodland and scattered villages, typical of the Vologda countryside.
