Guaratinga is a municipality in the far south of Bahia, inland from the coast, in hilly country once covered entirely by the Atlantic Forest. Much of the land has since become pasture, with patches of forest surviving on the steeper slopes. The town occupies the ground available between the hills, and its outline follows the terrain.
From above the urban area is small and irregular. Its main streets run along the lower ground, and side streets branch off at angles, climbing gently toward the surrounding slopes. Roads leave toward neighbouring municipalities, winding through the rolling landscape instead of cutting straight across it.
