Guyancourt is part of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, one of the new towns built around Paris from the late 1960s onward. It sits on a plateau just south-west of Versailles, and the map shows its planned origins clearly: broad curving roads, residential districts arranged in self-contained clusters, and generous green spaces threaded between them.
The commune is home to Renault's Technocentre, a large research and design complex that appears on the map as a vast, orderly site, and to a campus of the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Older fragments remain too, including the original village centre and farmland at the edges of the plateau.
Water marks the landscape as well. The ponds of La Minière, part of the network built to supply the fountains of Versailles, still lie at the edge of the commune.
