Hässleholm grew up in the second half of the nineteenth century as a railway junction, and the tracks still define the map. The Southern Main Line between Malmö and Stockholm runs through the town, and several other lines branch off here. The railway area forms a long band through the centre, with streets arranged on both sides of it.
The town centre is compact and largely modern, with regular blocks near the station and looser residential areas spreading outward. Beyond them lies the wooded, lake-dotted landscape of northern Skåne, very different from the open farmland in the south of the province. Finjasjön, a large lake, lies just west of the town.
