Haflong is the headquarters of Dima Hasao district and is often called the only hill station in Assam. From above, the town has no grid at all: its roads loop along ridges and around slopes, and houses spread along them in curving bands, following the land rather than any plan.
Haflong Lake sits close to the centre of town, a calm shape among the winding streets. The Lumding–Silchar railway, converted to broad gauge in recent years, passes through the district via tunnels and bridges, crossing some of the most difficult terrain on the Indian rail network.
