Hannō lies in south-western Saitama Prefecture, where the Kantō Plain meets the forested hills that lead toward Chichibu, about an hour by train from Ikebukuro. The city's map has two faces: a compact urban centre around the station and the river, and a vast western area of steep, wooded mountains where only narrow roads and small villages follow the valleys.
The Iruma River flows past the centre in a series of curves, with wide gravel banks popular for summer barbecues and swimming. Above the town rises Tenranzan, a small hill with views across the plain toward Tokyo.
