Harlem lies in upper Manhattan, north of Central Park, where the regular street grid continues but meets a more varied landscape. To the west, Morningside Park and St. Nicholas Park follow a steep rocky ridge, and to the east the Harlem River separates Manhattan from the Bronx. Marcus Garvey Park rises as a rocky outcrop in the middle of the grid, interrupting the avenue that runs through it.
125th Street is the district's main east-west street and home to the Apollo Theater. Wide avenues including Lenox Avenue, also called Malcolm X Boulevard, run north through rows of brownstones. In the early twentieth century Harlem was the centre of the Harlem Renaissance, a flowering of African American literature, music and art.
