Hawthorne lies in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, a few miles inland from the Pacific. From above, it is a dense and almost perfectly regular grid, typical of the Los Angeles basin. The Hawthorne Municipal Airport, also known as Jack Northrop Field, takes up a long rectangle on the city's east side.
