Hennenman lies in the Free State goldfields area, a short distance from Welkom and Virginia, on the level grasslands and maize country of the Highveld. Seen from above, the town is a clear, orderly arrangement of rectangular blocks, laid out in the straightforward manner of many South African country towns that grew around a railway.
The railway is still one of the strongest lines on the map, running past the town and shaping the way its streets are oriented.
