Hida City covers a large mountainous area in northern Gifu Prefecture. It was formed in 2004 when Furukawa, Kamioka and several neighbouring towns and villages merged. The map shows valleys and basins with small urban centres in the lowest, flattest ground. Between them lie long stretches of forested mountains, crossed by winding roads and rail lines along the rivers.
Furukawa is the city's centre. The Kamioka district, deep in the mountains, is known worldwide for Super-Kamiokande, a large neutrino detector built underground in a former mine. It is an unexpected science site in a rural setting.
