Huntington Beach faces the Pacific along an almost straight stretch of the Orange County coast, and on a map that shoreline dominates everything. Pacific Coast Highway runs parallel to the sand. Behind it, a regular grid of streets and residential blocks extends inland, broken by parks, wetlands and the curving lines of newer subdivisions.
The city calls itself Surf City USA. Its pier reaches well out into the ocean from the end of Main Street and marks the centre of downtown.
