Idstein lies in the Taunus hills of Hesse, north-west of Frankfurt and between Wiesbaden and Limburg. On a map, the old town is easy to find. It is a small, closely packed oval of lanes on rising ground where the castle and palace stand. Around it, newer districts spread along the valley and up the surrounding slopes.
The town is known for its half-timbered houses, many of which are well preserved around the market square. It is also known for the Hexenturm, the tall round tower that belonged to the old castle. On the map the old core is a dense knot of short, bending streets. Outside it, the pattern opens into residential streets, schools and small industrial areas. Forest covers the hills that close the view on most sides.
