Lake Ilmen lies in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia, a wide and shallow body of water in flat, low country. Its outline is rounded but uneven, and the most striking thing on a map is the network of rivers converging on it from the south and east, including the Msta, the Lovat and the Shelon.
Only one river leaves the lake: the Volkhov, which flows north out of its northern tip, passes through Veliky Novgorod and continues toward Lake Ladoga. That single outflow gives the composition a clear direction, with the old city set just downstream on both banks of the river.
An Ilmen map poster shows the lake as the centre of a historic water network. The Volkhov route formed part of the medieval trade connection between the Baltic and the south, and Novgorod grew beside it.
