Ipubi is a municipality in the western sertão of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, close to the Chapada do Araripe, a long flat-topped plateau that runs along the border with Ceará. On the map the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by dry country, with rural roads fanning out toward farms and small communities.
The region belongs to the Araripe gypsum district, one of the most important sources of gypsum in Brazil, and mining and processing are central to the local economy. The climate is semi-arid, and the landscape is dominated by caatinga, the drought-adapted scrubland of the interior of the Northeast.
