Isa lies in the north of Kagoshima Prefecture, in an upland basin surrounded by forested hills. From above, the main towns sit on flat valley floors lined with rice paddies, and the Sendai River winds through the area in long curves. Small roads link scattered hamlets, and the rest of the landscape is largely wooded hills.
The present city was formed in 2008 by merging the towns of Ōkuchi and Hishikari. The Hishikari mine is known as one of the highest-grade gold mines in the world. On the Sendai River, the wide Sogi Falls is a well-known local sight, sometimes described as a small Niagara.
